On the other side of the world, there is a special town called Coober Pedy. It sits in South Australia, and it gets its name from the aboriginal term kupa-piti. This means something like “white man’s hole.” The small town in South Australia is far from just about everywhere. Although aboriginals lived in the area, the town’s history began in 1915, when opals were discovered in the region. Opal mining drew large numbers of Europeans, who began digging and looking for riches.
