美籍華裔建築大師貝聿銘前天在紐約與世長辭，享嵩壽102歲。獲譽為「現代主義建築的最後大師」的他，作品遍布全球四大洲，包括台中東海大學路思義教堂在內。而從法國羅浮宮金字塔到紐約低收入住宅，他以簡單素材、幾何形狀、乾淨分明的結構，巧妙地平衡前衛與保守，兼具大膽與實用性，更拉近大眾與現代主義建築的距離，為此獲獎無數，造就傳奇的一生。而1989年貝聿銘完成羅浮宮金字塔後不久，中國也發生六四天安門事件。當他得知中國共產黨為了維護政權，不惜當街屠殺學生、百姓後，也曾就這場屠城慘劇發表意見，批評中共。
六四天安門事件後，貝聿銘在美國《紐約時報》以「China Won't Ever Be the Same」（中國將永遠不一樣）為題，撰寫評論文章。他在文中指，1978年鄧小平的經濟改革，使他有機會在中國工作。當自己與新一代中國人合作時，對中國未來的希望更樂觀，相信中國正逐漸擺脫戰爭和人民受（共產黨）壓迫的長期噩夢。（Deng Xiaoping's remarkable economic reforms, we were given the chance to work in China. As I worked with a new generation of Chinese, my hopes for the future of China were ever more optimistic. We believed that China was gradually emerging from its long nightmare of war and repression.）
接著，貝聿銘提及，天安門事件讓這些夢想破滅。他感到非常震驚。這種反感很快就變成憤怒，繼而再變成悲傷，這些都是不必要的。(these dreams are dashed by the horrible events at Tiananmen Square. We were shocked beyond measure. The revulsion soon turned to anger, then sadness, for it was all so unnecessary.)
貝聿銘直言，殺害學生和市民，讓對中華人民共和國未來抱有希望的（他們）這一代人心碎。 (The killing of students and citizens tore the heart out of a generation that carries the hope for the future of the country. )
貝聿銘在文末中表示，不清楚自己能否再到中國工作，但無論如何，強調自己不能接受1989年6月3日晚天安門廣場上，所有流血事件。（Will we ever be able to work in China again? I am not sure. In any case, I cannot accept the thought that all the blood was shed in vain that Saturday night, June 3, 1989, at Tiananmen Square.）（國際中心／綜合外電報導）
