The commanding officer of Britain’s largest ever aircraft carrier has taken control of the ship at Rosyth Dockyard in Scotland.

The 65,000-tonne HMS Queen Elizabeth is longer than the Houses of Parliament and has a 4 and a half-acre flight deck, roughly the size of four football pitches.

Each of the carrier’s two propellers weigh 33 tonnes, about two and a half times the weight of a double-decker bus.

The vessel will hold a crew of 679 sailors and can accommodate up to 900 air crew and marines.

The aircraft carrier has two islands on the flight deck. The forward island bridge is used for navigation commands, while the aft island bridge is mainly used for aircraft controls.

It has two aircraft lifts, each of which can move two F-35s from the hangar to the flight deck in 60 seconds.

The Queen Elizabeth was designed primarily to carry the F-35B, which can take off on short runways and land vertically.

It can accommodate up to 36 F-35B jets and four AW101 Merlin helicopters. It can also carry Chinook heavy-lift helicopters and Apache gunships.

Its long-range radar can detect and track up to 1,000 air targets within 250 nautical miles.

It is also equipped with a medium-range radar that can thwart complex jammers and track targets as small as a snooker ball within 12 miles.

The carrier is armed with the latest generation of the Phalanx close-in weapons system, which can fire 3,000 20-millimeter shells per minute.

The HMS Queen Elizabeth and its sister ship, the Prince of Wales, will be the second-largest carriers in the world, after the USS Nimitz class, and larger than Russia’s Admiral Kuznetsov and China’s Liaoning.

The HMS Queen Elizabeth will begin sea trials next year and is expected to be deployed in 2021. The Prince of Wales is still under construction in Rosyth and is expected to be completed in 18 months.
