This viral video was filmed at San Francisco State University, and has been viewed over 1.5 million times, sparking debate over cultural appropriation.

Students Cory Goldstein, also known by his DJ name Soulr,

Bonita Tindle, who has dabbled in cinematography… and Tindle’s unidentified lacky... were arguing over Goldstein’s dreadlocks. Tindle believes the hairdo is offensive to black culture.

But Goldstein argues that the locks date back to Egyptian times. And he isn’t wrong.

The exact history of the hairstyle is a bit hazy, but there has been evidence of dreadlocks dating as far back as 2,500 BCE.

The first written evidence is in what is now India’s Vedic scriptures.

In them, the deity Shiva is shown wearing the style. The word used in the Vedic scriptures is “jaTaa”, which means “twisted lock of hair.”

Others have pointed out that in the Old Testament, Samson is mentioned as having dreadlocks and, when Delilah cuts them, loses his unsurpassed strength.

So, it seems Goldstein has a right to his dreads. And perhaps Tindle and her buddy were overreacting and should have kept their thoughts to themselves? What do you think?
