Images of a lion with a gruesome neck injury surfaced on Facebook over the weekend. They were posted by two tourists on safari in Kruger National Park, who say they saw the lion stumbling on a road with a snare wrapped around its neck.

The women snapped a few images and quickly went to find help. Unfortunately, by the time they reached authorities, the lion had already wandered off.

The women frantically turned to Facebook, posting images of the lion in hopes of speeding up the search.

Obviously, dissatisfied with the rescue efforts by park authorities.

And the story didn’t take long to spread like wildfire on social media.

But, finding the lion was easier said than done. Kruger National Park is rather large, rounding out at about 7,500 square miles. It’s roughly the size of Israel. That’s a lot of bush to sort through.

After two days, the lion was spotted wandering around a crocodile-infested river. Using a tranquilizing dart … and helicopter, officials were finally able to catch the big cat.

After removing the snare, rescuers were able to treat the injured lion.

The snare had cut up the lion’s neck and pierced one of his eyes.

They believe the trap was set up by poachers trying to catch smaller game.

A snare typically consists of a wire that tightens around an animal’s neck as it struggles to free itself.

The lion, named Percy, has since been released and the park reports he is recovering well.

Moral of the story? Park officials don’t suck, poachers do …  and cats really do have nine lives.
