The sleepy Maine town of Lewiston was woken from its slumber this week by some political attack posters that some residents have labeled ‘racist’.
The controversy was sparked when local landlord Joe Dunne put two posters up on properties he manages attacking mayoral candidate Ben Chin.
The signs read “Don’t vote for Ho Chi Chin, Vote for more jobs, not more welfare” and feature a caricature of former Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh on a red background with Communist symbols the hammer and sickle.
Chin and his supporters have called the posters racist, and held a rally in protest at them.
While Dunne was forced to take down the posters after his tenants complained, though he says he will put them back up somewhere else.
In his defense, Dunne said he is not racist and put up the posters as pushback after Chin personally attacked him, labelled him a ‘slumlord’ and vowed to fight for tenant’s rights should he be elected, policies which Dunne says are ‘Communist.’
And although the play on words may have been made in jest, Chin’s ancestors actually came to the US from China, not Vietnam.
