SAIHAT, SAUDI ARABIA — Around 7 p.m. on Friday, a gunman in his 20s approached a Shiite meeting hall in Saudi Arabia’s eastern province of Saihat and open fired at random. Four men and three women were shot dead, while another nine were injured. Police later intervened and opened fire on the gunman, killing him, reports Al Jazeera.
A group calling itself Islamic State-Bahrain State and allegedly affiliated with the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for an attack on a Shiite meeting hall in Saudi Arabia. In a statement posted online, the group said that Shughaa al-Dosari, one of it’s “soldiers”, “attacked a Shia infidel temple”, and warned that “infidels will not be safe in the island of Mohammed”, according to AFP.
The incident is the latest in a string of shootings and bombings linked to Sunni extremists, just two days after the start of Ashura, one of the holiest occasions for Shiites.
