When this three-story Brooklyn building exploded on Saturday, October 3, investigators suspected a gas leak.
Now, however, cops believe two powerful blasts that brought down the building was a dramatic suicide.
Francisca Figueroa lived on the second floor of a building in Brooklyn’s Borough Park and owned a hair salon on the ground floor.
The 48-year-old mother had posted suicidal thoughts online, with the New York Post reporting she’d been ordered evicted from her apartment last Thursday.
Authorities say Figueroa may have assembled various chemical products from her salon and used them to fuel the two powerful blasts that obliterated the building, killing both herself and another woman.
An improperly removed stove in the apartment had been investigator’s focus until it was found Figueroa’s gas had been shut off as she hadn’t paid her gas bill.
She and third floor resident Ligia Puello, 64, both died in the explosions. 13 others were injured.
Figueroa leaves behind a teenage daughter and son, while investigators and relatives
struggle to understand why a person described by neighbors as a ‘sweet, kind woman who kept to herself’ may’ve chosen such a violent end.
