Ads offering rent free housing to women in exchange for sex are rampant on the website, Craigslist.
The ads are mostly posted by lonely older men looking for a woman to share their house with.
Many of them list housework and chores along with sex as a form of rent payment.
Authorities are worried that vulnerable women might resort to having sex out of desperation for a place to live.
Although it is illegal to offer any kind of compensation for sex, police have a hard time prosecuting this particular kind of solicitation.
Another concern is that the women go for the scheme might get forced into other activities they didn’t sign up for.
They might accept the initial arrangement then get forced into straight up prostitution, sex slavery, or human trafficking.
Police who are investigating these unsavory Craigslist ads say that their legal status depends on the wording. Using phrases like “roommate with benefits” is too vague,
but if they specifically use the word “sex” in lieu of rent, that could be grounds for prosecution.
Dayton, Ohio Assistant prosecutor, Andrew Sexton, told WDTN TV that prosecuting based on the ads alone would be difficult.
Some of the men posting these ads were tracked down by an investigative journalist in Ohio,
who admitted that their Craigslist ads did indeed mean they were seeking sex in lieu of rent.
