King of Egypt：Saint George, Saint George, what hast thou done? Thou hast killed and slain my elder son. Five pounds for a doctor.
埃及王：聖喬治，聖喬治，你做了甚麼？你殺了我的長子。我出五鎊聘請醫生。
Doctor：No five pounds Doctor.
醫生：沒有五鎊的醫生。
King of Egypt: Ten pounds.
埃及王：十鎊吧。
Doctor：Here I be!
醫生：醫生在此！
Mother：Don't cry, Mary. The doctor will cure the king's son with his magic medicine. See, there I told you. He's on his feet already. It's only a play.
母親：瑪麗，別哭，醫生會用神藥把王子治好。你看，我不是跟你說了嗎，王子已站起來。這只是一場戲。
Father：They do it every New Year. Now take this money, Mary, and make sure you put it in the Doctor's hat when he comes round.
父親：他們逢新年都演這齣戲。瑪麗，這些錢你拿著，待會兒那醫生走到我們面前，就放在他的帽子裏。
Mother：Yes, that money all goes to good causes. I think this year they're collecting money to help old people.
母親：對，這錢是做慈善用的。今年他們似乎是為老人籌款。
假如你沒有看過mummers' play或mumming play，本課對話也許較難明白。
Mum是「演出默劇」，mummer自然是「默劇演員」。從前聖誕節期間，英國有些青少年會挨家挨戶表演默劇，希望獲得賞金，有點像中國農曆新年舞獅。劇本角色循例有聖喬治、武士、醫生等，劇情則循例有兩人格鬥，一人死在劍下，獲江湖郎中救治復活。這種默劇後來加上對話，但仍稱mummers' play，例如：Today, mummers' plays are still performed in many parts of Britain at Christmas and New Year, and characteristically end with a plea for money from the audience（今天，英國不少地方在聖誕節和新年仍有賀歲劇表演，演後總會請觀眾給賞金）。
說到聖喬治，有兩點不可不談。第一，他是古羅馬軍人，信仰基督，約於公元三○三年殉教。第二，他據說曾經屠龍救美，用龍血在盾上畫一十字。英格蘭以他為守護神 (patron saint)，所以英格蘭旗幟也有個紅十字，這紅十字叫St George's cross，在英國國旗上同樣清晰可見。
本課對話裡的埃及王說：Thou hast killed and slain my elder son。Slain是slay的完成式，過去式是slew，和kill同義，是比較文雅的說法，例如：He played st. George, the dragon slayer（他扮演屠龍者聖喬治）。Thou、hast都是古英語，等於you和have。不過，you可作主詞(subject)或受詞(object)，也可指「你」或「你們」；thou卻只能作主詞，而且只可指單數的「你」。
