Tex：Why did they do that? Were they fans from the team that got beaten yesterday?
特克斯：為甚麼打他呢？他們是昨天落敗那支球隊的球迷嗎？
Denny：No, it says that one of them got angry when Jerry started to talk to his girl.
丹尼：不是。報道說哲力跟其中一人的女朋友搭訕，令他勃然大怒。
Tex：Oh, the usual story. And I bet they’d all had too much to drink.
特克斯：啊，又是那回事。我打賭他們都喝醉了。
一名足球員被人打黑了眼眶，報紙說：He was assaulted by two guys in a night club. They punched him several times。撞傷或打傷變得青腫的眼眶，英文叫black eye，俚語叫shiner，例如：She said her black eyes/her shiners were the result of a bad fall, but we suspected that her violent husband was the cause（她說兩個黑眼圈是自己失足重重跌倒的結果，但我們懷疑是她那暴躁丈夫幹的）。Black字也可作動詞，例如：I gave him a heavy blow in the face, blacking his left eye（我朝他臉上重重一擊，把他的左眼打得又青又腫）。留意東方人的黑眼睛也可叫black eyes，例如：Her black oriental eyes charmed us all（她富東方韻味的黑眼睛，把我們迷了）。讀者也許會問：瘀傷的眼眶叫black eye，睡眠不足引起的黑眼圈叫甚麼？答案是dark-ringed eyes，例如：(1) He worked late into the night, his eyes dark-ringed with fatigue（他工作至深夜，眼圈因疲倦而發黑）。(2) Her dark-ringed eyes told of nights of sleeplessness（她兩個黑眼圈，顯示連夜無眠）。Assault是「毆打」，punch是「用拳頭重擊」，兩字都是既可作名詞也可作動詞，例如：(1) They were arrested for assaulting the soccer player/for an assault on the soccer player（他們因毆打那足球員被捕）。(2) Losing my temper, I punched him hard on the nose/gave him a hard punch on the nose（我按捺不住脾氣，一拳重重打在他鼻子上）。
