deep表「深的」，end 表「盡頭」，go off the deep end 字面上指「走到最深的盡頭」，引申為形容某人勃然大怒，「大發雷霆」之意。
例：She went off the deep end when she learned that he was fired again.
（當她知道他又被開除時，氣到大發雷霆。）
end表「末端」，mee表「相遇」，make ends meet 字面上的意思為「使兩端相接」。在收支簿上有「收入」與「支出」兩部分，這兩欄最後的總和至少要相符合，才能維持收支平衡。此俚語便用來形容「使收支平衡」，勉強餬口之意。
例：He has to take several part-time jobs to make ends meet.
（他必須兼好幾份差才能勉強餬口。）
bitter表「苦的」，to the bitter end 表「到痛苦的盡頭」，用來形容下定決心去做某件事，即使再苦、再困難也「堅持不懈」。
