deep表「深的」,end 表「盡頭」,go off the deep end 字面上指「走到最深的盡頭」,引申為形容某人勃然大怒,「大發雷霆」之意。
例:She went off the deep end when she learned that he was fired again.
(當她知道他又被開除時,氣到大發雷霆。)
end表「末端」,mee表「相遇」,make ends meet 字面上的意思為「使兩端相接」。在收支簿上有「收入」與「支出」兩部分,這兩欄最後的總和至少要相符合,才能維持收支平衡。此俚語便用來形容「使收支平衡」,勉強餬口之意。
例:He has to take several part-time jobs to make ends meet.
(他必須兼好幾份差才能勉強餬口。)
bitter表「苦的」,to the bitter end 表「到痛苦的盡頭」,用來形容下定決心去做某件事,即使再苦、再困難也「堅持不懈」。
