Apparent、apparently是動詞appear的形容詞(adjective)、副詞(adverb)。Appear即「看來」或「似乎」；凡根據表面跡象或傳聞等下的判斷，都可以用appear、apparent、apparently三字來說，例如：She appears (to be) uninterested in music、She is apparently uninterested in music、She shows an apparent lack of interest in music（她似乎對音樂沒有興趣）。Seem也有「似乎」的意思，往往可以和appear通用，例如你大可以說She seems (to be) uninterested in music、She is seemingly uninterested in music、She shows a seeming lack of interest in music。語氣上，seem比appear隨便一點。又由於appear是指表面跡象或傳聞」等客觀根據，主觀的感想就不宜用appear來說，應改用seem，例如：It seems (to be) a mercy that she died before the war broke out（她在戰爭爆發之前去世，似乎也算是件幸運的事了）。Jill's father's a bit of a rogue apparently這一句，加上apparently一字，是表示「根據傳聞，但不能絕對肯定」。這是apparently的一個常見用法，例如：Apparently she is a very beautiful woman, though I have never seen her（我沒有見過她，但據說她十分美麗）。凱西說姬兒父親擁有的房子，可能是不誠實交易的收穫：That's probably the result of one of the questionable deals。Probably一字，有「很可能」的含義；假如改為possibly，雖然也是說「可能」，但語氣就沒有那麼肯定了。
