瑪麗亞：你有沒有聽到那個令人難過的消息？
David：You mean about Pope John Paul? I'd heard that he was very ill.
大衛：你是說教宗若望保祿的消息？我聽說他病得很重。
Maria：No, it's worse than that. He passed away about an hour ago.
瑪麗亞：不是，比那還要糟。他約一小時之前去世了。
David：Oh, I am so sorry to hear that. He was a very great man.
大衛：喔，真令人惋惜。他是個偉大人物。
Maria：Yes, he was respected all over the world, even among non-Christians.
瑪麗亞：沒錯，他受到全世界人的敬重，即使非天主教徒也不例外。
David：Let's switch the TV on and get the latest news from Rome.
大衛：我們打開電視，看看羅馬來的最新消息吧。
人生必有死，但無論中外，生人都諱言死或die，因此產生了無數委婉說法(euphemism)。Pass away等於中文的「過世」，也作pass on。死者似乎只是路過人世，現在去了另一處，名詞是passing，例如：(1) He passed away/on in his sleep（他在睡夢中去世）。(2) The world silently mourned the Pope's passing（世人默默為教宗去世哀傷）。
對基督教徒而言，死亡無非to be alive with Jesus（和耶穌同生）、to live in the bosom of the Lord（活在主的懷中）、to be with Jesus/the Lord（和耶穌/主同在）、to be in the arms of Jesus（在耶穌的臂彎裡、to be in heaven（在天堂裡）等，例如：Pope John Paul now lives in the bosom of the Lord（教宗若望保祿如今活在主的懷抱裡）。這和中文的「仙遊」、「歸道山」等差不多了。
To fall asleep（睡了）、to be asleep in Jesus（睡在耶穌懷裡）、sleep（睡眠）等，則和中文的「長眠」同樣寓意，例如訃聞上可以這樣寫：In loving memory of my husband Charles Chen who fell asleep on 1 October（外子陳查理十月一日過逝，於此謹誌哀思）。
美國俚語check out是以「結帳離開旅館」比喻死亡，頗似李白所謂「天地者，萬物之逆旅也」。He checked out before the ambulance arrived即「救護車未到，他就捐館了」。歷來死者無數，死人當然多於生人。所以to join the (great) majority（加入了大多數人那一邊）也是指「死亡」，例如：My father joined the great majority two years ago（家父兩年前物故了）。
