The mayor's wife turned her back on Laura。To turn one's back on somebody是成語，譯作「轉身背向某人」，一般指「背向某人，不理不睬」或「背棄某人」，例如：(1) Having achieved wealth and fame, he turned his back on his old friends（他發了財，出了名，就不再和老朋友往來）。(2) I cannot turn my back on a friend when he is in trouble（朋友有困難，我不能置之不理）。說「不理睬人家」，英文還有to cut somebody dead、to give somebody the cold shoulder等成語，本欄以前談過；此外有一個說法也應談談：to snub somebody。Snub作形容詞，指「鼻子短而微翹」，例如a snub nose。翹起鼻子，常給人傲慢的感覺，所以snub作動詞，指「侮慢」，通常是不理睬人家，例如：(1) The mayor's wife snubbed Laura by turning her back on her（市長夫人侮慢的轉身背向蘿拉，不理不睬）。(2) She felt snubbed when she was not invited to the party（她不獲邀請出席派對，覺得受到侮慢）。現在談談You should have seen what happened這類句子。說過去，should have或ought to have表示句子所說事情沒有發生；shouldn't have或oughtn't to have則表示句子所說事情發生了，例如：(1) He should have/ought to have told you. Why didn't he?（他早該告訴你了。為甚麼他卻沒有這麼做？）(2) You shouldn't have/oughtn't to have believed him（你真不該相信他的）。
