Susan:Well, I've just been reading how useful cell phones have been for rescuing tourists in Sri Lanka.

Susan:Well many were stranded by the tsunami in the remote area of the country where they had been hiking. They couldn't get out, but the authorities were able to locate them when they made calls on their phones.

南亞海嘯之後，旅遊須知添了一條規則：Always make sure you've got an international roaming cell phone.
「行動電話」英式英文稱為mobile phone，簡稱mobile（流通的）；美式英文則稱為cellular phone，簡稱cell phone或cell。Cell一般指「細胞」或「蜂巢」；無線電話靠無線電波傳達，通話區劃分為多個電波頻率格子，這些格子也稱為cell。所以行動電話稱為cellular phone。這類電話採用頻率搜尋以及跳頻技術，這樣，你走到不同的頻率格子裡，通話仍可繼續，不會中斷：By means of frequency-searching and frequency-hopping, the cellular telephone allows you to carry on a telephone conversation when travelling through different cells。
Roam是「漫步」、「閒逛」，例如：He likes to roam the countryside（他喜歡在鄉間漫遊）。行動電話的漫遊技術也叫roaming，藉此你身在異邦也可以接通本國的電話，例如：I called my parents on my international roaming cellular phone to report my safe arrival in Egypt（我打國際漫遊電話給父母，說已安全到達埃及）。
斯里蘭卡當局憑遊客打的電話，找到了他們所在：The authorities were able to locate them。說「當局」，英文習慣用複數形式的the authorities；但如果說明是某個政府機構或部門，則可用單數形式的authority，例如：(1)Environmental groups are generally unpopular with the authorities(環保團體一般都不受為當局所歡迎)。(2)The education authority is going to review the examination system(教育當局將檢討考試制度)。
