不論當天的天色如何，相信很多人在出門之前會先看看氣溫，以便穿著合適的衣服。要問今天的氣溫如何，英文可說：What's the temperature today?（今天的氣溫是多少度？）。量度溫度有兩種制式：攝氏（℃）(Celsius) 和華氏（℉）(Fahrenheit)。例如：36℃ (36 Degrees Celsius)代表攝氏36度。不過，歐美國家多採用華氏。另外，把水燒至約攝氏100度左右會到達沸點，英文叫Boiling point，而水到達冰點0℃ (Freezing point) 時就會結冰。
Helen:I'm burning up in here, Russell. What's the temperature today?
海倫:我快熱死在這裡了，拉塞爾，今天到底幾度啊?
Russell:Hmm…the weather lady said it was going to be a scorcher.
拉塞爾:嗯……天氣女郎說今天將會非常炎熱。
Helen:Can you smell that?
海倫:你有沒有聞到些怪味?
Russell:Something burning?
拉塞爾:有東西燒焦了?
Helen:The kitchen is on fire! Our dinner!
海倫:廚房起火了啦，我們的晚餐！
Russell:Oh, my beer!
拉塞爾:噢，我的啤酒！
氣溫是以華氏或攝氏度數計算。華氏叫Fahrenheit，攝氏則有Celsius、centigrade兩個說法：centigrade是日常用語，Celsius則是科學界用語。華氏溫度計（Fahrenheit thermometer)由德國人GD Fahrenheit 發明，攝氏溫度計由瑞典人Anders Celsius發明，所以Fahrenheit、Celsius須用大寫，centigrade則不用。
華氏、攝氏度數的縮寫是℃和℉。人家問：What's the temperature?（氣溫是多少？）你可以說：It is (或The temperature is ) about 20 degrees centigrade.（大約是攝氏二十度）。同一地區的人採用同一溫度計，是攝氏還是華氏不用說明，就可略去centigrade、Fahrenheit等字。
氣溫假如降至攝氏零度以下，那麼，你可以說 X degrees below freezing（或zero)，例如：It's seven degrees below zero.（氣溫是零下七度）。零度以下的氣溫，叫subzero temperatures，例如：Subzero temperatures are expected for the next couple of days.（經後幾天氣溫，預料將降至零度以下）。
說「今天氣溫最高將升至攝氏二十度，最低將降至十五度」，英文是Today's high will be 20℃, and low 15℃ 或A temperature range of 15℃-20℃ is expected。
氣溫在二三十度、三四十度之間，英文說法是in the twenties、in the thirties之類，例如：Tomorrow's temperatures will be in the high twenties and low thirties.（明天氣溫將是二十五至三十五度）。
